Mucrotermes
Another taxonomically heterogeneous group found in forest and moist savannahs, usually in the mounds and nests of other species. Apparently all Group IV soil feeders.

This genus is very close to Cubitermes (see discussion in Sands, 1998). It is an inhabitant of savannah woodland in west and central Africa. The genus sometimes builds fairly large soil mounds, but is also found as a secondary occupant of the mounds. Group IV feeder.
Found in Savannah and savannah-forest mosaic to deserts in East, Central and Southern Africa. It is usually found in the mounds and nests of other species, although it does sometimes build small domed mounds of its own, often associated with grass tussocks. It has also been recorded under stones and fallen logs, and under bovid dung. It is a Group IV feeder, although it may feed on extremely rotten wood as well as soil (Uys, 1996?).
Found throughout the savannah woodland and forests of Africa. Appears to be an obligate mound inhabiting genus, and may feed on the matrix of soil mounds, either still occupied or abandoned.
Its large worker crop and extremely extended apical teeth suggest a genus that has a large throughput of material. Very closely related to Ophiotermes and Furculitermes.
An apparently phylogenetically basal group, its only close relation apparently the Oriental genus Labritermes. Poorly known biologically, but apparently a Group III soil feeder.
Found from a wide range of habitats, from montane grassland at 1000-2000 m, to rain forest and moist savannah.

Found in arid environments in Palaearctic and Afrotropical Africa. Has been found in Cubitermes mounds and on the roots of maize plants and ground nuts.
One of a group of closely related genera which are usually inhabitants of Cubitermes mounds. Crenetermes inhabits old Cubitermes mounds, building characteristic round structures on to the original construction. These are made of soil and lozenge-like raised areas all over their surface.
Otherwise Crenetermes is a typical Cubitermes-group Group IV feeder found commonly in soil pits.
Forest specialist in the Guinea-Congolese block. It has very distinctive, highly structured, carton mounds, usually built against tree trunks or large fallen logs. The outer surface of the mound is extremely hard, formed of dark brown carton, 5-10 cm thick. Under this crust the carton becomes softer, and formed of sheets of light brown carton. At the bottom of the mound is another hard carton shell within which lies the queen cell.
Recorded from savannah woodland in Zimbabwe and Nigeria, from mounds of Macrotermes, Odontotermes, Cubitermes and Odontotermes. Group IV feeders.
