Alyscotermes
A genus that spans a wide range of Africa (see map). Alyscotermes kilamadjaricus has been found from Gambia to Cape Province up to altitudes of > 2500 m. It nests underground, or in the mounds and nests of other species. It has also been reported to show 'sociotomie' (Grasse & Norot 1951), swarming behaviour where apparently whole colonies move above ground, carrying the queen, apparently looking for a new place to nest. This appear to be in response to attack by doryline ants (Sands 1972). A.
